Saints teacher gets SA colours in Ultimate Frisbee

Our English teacher, Mr. Ivan Reckling, received his South African colours at u/24-level for Ultimate Frisbee this month. He shares more on his passion for the sport here:

I started playing Ultimate Frisbee in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of my friends introduced me to the sport and I’ve been playing it ever since.

Mr. Ivan is part of Elevation Ultimate, an Ultimate Frisbee club in Potchefstroom. They train every Monday and Thursday from 16:30. Practice lasts for an hour and 30 minutes.

An Ultimate Frisbee match lasts for 100 minutes or when a team (consisting of 2-7 players) reaches 15 points. A point is scored when a team crosses the opposition's goal-line with the frisbee after catching it successfully.

Mr. Ivan plays as a handler for his club and as a winger on a national level.

“As a winger you have to run and up and down the field and be able to catch the frisbee. Handlers need to be able to throw the frisbee accurately,” he adds.

"It is quite surreal to be playing Ultimate Frisbee for S.A. It is strange, because Ultimate Frisbee is not the most popular sport. It is not something that everyone is aware of."

"There are a lot of pros to this sport. For example, we make use of rolling substitutions, it is great for fitness and it is very accessible for any age group."
